In December 1992, Vogue US unveiled the editorial “Grunge & Glory,” a story meant to reinterpret the meeting point between street culture and high fashion.
Shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Grace Coddington, the series featured Kristen McMenamy, Naomi Campbell, and Nadja Auermann — leading faces of the supermodel era — set against a sparse, savanna-like landscape.
The styling blended thrift-store aesthetics with designer labels: flannel shirts, Nirvana T-shirts, and Perry Ellis plaid pieces were reimagined with a sense of luxury and attitude. The models’ layered looks combined the rough edge of streetwear and the essential elements of grunge with elegance, creating a striking visual tension that felt both urgent and poetic.
This shoot coincided with Marc Jacobs’ grunge-inspired collection for Perry Ellis, widely considered one of the first moments when grunge infiltrated the world of luxury fashion.
